A cast-in-place reinforced concrete pool:
a project designed for your site.

A reinforced concrete pool cast using wall formwork takes shape on site from a design adapted to its surroundings. In French-speaking Switzerland, this approach allows dimensions, uses and integration into the garden to be considered together, with careful technical design.

What does reinforced concrete cast in formwork mean?

Reinforced concrete combines concrete with steel reinforcement that contributes to the structure’s strength. The French term “banché” refers to casting between formwork panels, particularly for the walls. The base slab, which forms the pool’s foundation, is also part of the structural design.

Dimensions, reinforcement and connection details are defined for the project. This technique requires suitable design and execution; it involves more than pouring concrete into a shape. A bespoke pool must remain consistent with the ground, its equipment and site constraints.

Design the pool around how you will use it

Would you like to swim, enjoy a family space or have comfortable steps? The answer helps determine length, depth, access and resting areas. Concrete cast on site offers customisation possibilities within the limits established by the design and construction work.

Also think about life around the pool: paths, poolside areas, orientation, shade and views from the house. A cover, heating or counter-current swimming system should be planned early enough for openings and the plant room to fit the design.

In French-speaking Switzerland, the site and formalities matter

A sloping plot, narrow access or water in the ground can change the work required. Assessing the site helps anticipate excavation, removal of earth and arrangements for water around the structure. Loads and constraints are checked before the structure is sized.

Before work starts, ask your municipality to clarify the applicable procedures and permits, as well as any cantonal requirements. Positioning, energy, water disposal and neighbouring properties may form part of the application. A rule applying in one municipality should not automatically be extended to all of French-speaking Switzerland.

From excavation to casting: prepare every stage

Work proceeds through setting out, excavation and preparing the base, followed by reinforcement and formwork. Embedded fittings and service penetrations must be coordinated before concreting. Quality depends on more than the chosen concrete: placement and attention to details also matter.

The base slab and walls may be built in several stages depending on the chosen method. Construction joints must therefore be planned and treated. After casting, curing protects young concrete so that it hardens correctly and reduces cracking risks caused by overly rapid water loss. Timing is determined according to site conditions.

Structure, waterproofing and finish: three coordinated roles

A strong structure alone does not define a watertight pool. The waterproofing system must be designed together with the pool, joints and penetrations: skimmers, return fittings, lights and other components. The chosen finish must be compatible with the substrate, preparation and water treatment.

A reinforced membrane, tiles or another suitable finish each have different requirements. Tiles alone do not constitute a complete waterproofing system. Compare the desired appearance, installation details and maintenance needs, then validate the whole system with the project’s professionals.

Plan operation from the construction stage

An accessible plant room makes checks and maintenance easier. Filtration, circulation, treatment, heating and the cover need to be sized and coordinated for the pool. Also plan safe access to the water, particularly for children, from the design stage.

When comparing proposals, ask for a clear scope: studies, excavation, structure, waterproofing, equipment, finishes and commissioning. Budget and schedule depend on this scope, the site and permits. At handover, tests, manuals and instruction prepare you for long-term pool use.

Piscines Privées builds reinforced concrete pools and helps you plan a pool suited to your property. Discover our construction page and maintenance services.

For an initial discussion on WhatsApp, send your municipality, a few photos of the site and your ideas: proposed dimensions, uses and equipment. These details will help us understand your project.

Sources and technical guidance

Design and maintenance work must be adapted to the pool and equipment. Project documents and manufacturers’ manuals remain the reference.
